Twende Berlin

This documentary is a film about urban spaces and our relationship to them as told through the eyes of a troupe of African hip-hop artists, produced by African based filmmakers.
After the success of Maskaniflani, an award-winning participatory documentary and music video about public art and public space in Kenya, the hiphop group 'Ukooflani' started to develop different projects to explore the urban space that they inhabit, using music and art. The group, is composed of 6 members plus"Upendo Hero" (the love hero) a mysterious character invented by Ukooflani to spread the message of love for public space.
Their big opportunity came when the Goethe Institut of Nairobi invited them to perform in Berlin. This gives them the chance to go to Europe and not only perform in one of the most iconic venues of the german capital, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, but also to meet different underground artists living and working there. The social issue which underpins the documentary is the importance of public space and public art in contemporary society, and how and why western metropolises are affected by the emerging phenomenon of "gentrification"
Ukooflani and Upendo Hero discover how artists and the so-called "creative class" become unwitting pawns in the shifting fortunes of Berlin neighbourhoods, as in many other cities. Seeking out low-rent areas they move in en masse, shift the demographic and profile of that space. This acts as a catalyst, increasing property values which can then often mean that the original inhabitants of these neighbourhoods can no longer afford to live there. Whilst these neighbourhoods were not necessarily always cohesive communities, often, and particularly in Berlin, they are. The city is, undeniably losing something. And this is what Ukoo flani and Upendo hero try to find out
They explore the city of Berlin, interacting with local citizens/activists, artists and the so called "creative class" to share with them their views and experiences about public space and public art. They try to understand why and how "gentrification" should and can be stopped in both European and African metropolises by making the "creative class" aware of its own political and cultural power. This documentary is not only a trip into the public space and public art scene of Berlin, but also a comparative study about the possible positive or negative impact of this emerging "creative class" in both Western and African metropolises, thanks also to the contribution of different urban sociologists from Kenyan and German universities.

subvert stereotypes and become both an object of social and cultural investigation to discover ourselves again

mobility tour

In 2004 i traveled all around Europefor  this TV series called MobilityTour about the EU enlargement. Sponsored by the City Hall and the Province of Perugia and produced by HUB/Integrated Communication). I traveled for 3 month in a Caravan with other 3 youth, from Italy to Estonia passing from: Slovenia, Hungry, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia. On the way back to Italy We decided to visit the ex DDR and the city of Berlin. The TV series talks about the east Europe, the falling down of the Berlin wall, the EU enlargement and the transition from the cold war conflict to the West and the Islam crisis.

"Un saggio è un bambino che è nato due volte"

"Come dice Eraclito: " il tempo è un bambino che gioca", il potere reale è il potere di un bambino. La vita non si deve trasformare in una questione d'affari. Gioca a volontà, ma non farlo con uno scopo, semplicemente sii come un bambino: lui gioca e non si preoccupa di quello che può ottenere dal gioco, salterella e si sente  felice. Fallire non è un fallimento se è un gioco. Al contrario, se si tratta d'affari anche una vittoria è una sconfitta. Chiedi ai Napoleone, agli Alessandro. Alla fine che otteniamo? Tu esci vittorioso e niente è stato raggiunto. Tu aspiravi tanto a quella meta ed adesso che l'hai raggiunta semplicemente ti senti frustrato e tutta la vita ti sembra persa. Ricordati: la vita sarà persa se insisti perseguendo obbiettivi, in quanto la vita non ha obbiettivi. E' un gioco senza proposito. Non porta in nessun posto, semplicemente va vissuta con gioia e pienezza. E' la cosa più difficile da capire perché la mente è matematica. DIce: "Ma quindi qual'è il significato? Qual' è lo scopo?"  E la mente immediatamente chiede: "Se non esiste un significato, perché quindi vivere? perché non suicidarsi?" Ma guarda bene: se ci fosse un significato, questo sarebbe così orribile…., sarebbe come una questione d'affari. Se ci fosse uno scopo, tutta la vita perderebbe la poesia. La poesia esiste perché non esiste uno scopo. Perché fiorisce una rosa? Chiedilo alla rosa e lei dirà: " Non sò, ma fiorire è così bello". Chiedi ad un uccello: " perché canti?" e lui semplicemente  resterà senza parole per la domanda assurda che gli hai fatto. Cantare è così bello, è una tale benedizione, perché fare questa domanda? Ma la mente sta sempre alla ricerca dello scopo, la mente è una realizzatrice, non è capace semplicemente di divertirsi. Deve avere una cosa nel futuro da realizzare, qualche meta deve essere raggiunta e così la mente si sente bene. Non esiste scopo, non c'è nessuna meta. In questo momento la vita intera sta celebrando, perché non partecipare? Perché non essere come un fiore, fiorendo senza nessuna finalità? E perché non essere come un fiume, scorrendo senza un motivo? Se tu fossi capace di tornare ad essere un bambino otterresti tutto. Un saggio è un bambino che è nato due volte. La seconda nascita è la vera nascita, in quanto quando qualcuno nasce due volte è perché ha partorito se stesso. E' una trasformazione, la persona è tornata ad essere bambino. Non chiede ragioni perché semplicemente vive. Qualsiasi sia il momento è capace di viverlo, no ha piani nè progetti. Vive senza esigere niente, ed è questa l'unica maniera di vivere; Per un bambino non esiste niente di malvagio, niente di buono, non esiste Dio nè il diavolo, un bambino accetta tutto. Ed un saggio pure accetta tutto. Per questo può dire: Dio è inverno ed estate, Dio è pace e guerra, Dio è il diavolo ed il bene, entrambe le cose. Per un saggio tutta la moralità scompare, tutte le distinzioni vanno sotto terra; tutto è sacro ed ogni luogo è sacro."

Carl è un ragazzo sui trenta anni, irlandese,ha i capelli lunghi e biondi, il pizzetto, è magrissimo, ricorda vagamente Jesù, indossa pantaloni a zampa, zoccoli di plastica gialli ed una maglietta aderente sopra l'ombellico. In principio era restio a dirmi il suo nome, mi diceva che lui non esisteva, niente esisteva, tutto era energia. Era venuto a vivere in un paesino interno del Brasile per stare vicino a un medium capace di comunicare con lo spirito dei morti e di trarne energia, ma era stato vittima di una grave intossicazione alimentare ed ora si trovava a Fortaleza. Mi raccontò che suo fratello era stato guarito da una frattura al naso senza essere toccato.
Scappò in un modo rocambolesco dall'ostello senza pagare gli ultimi due mesi di permanenza.
